Makeda is a black girl adopted by a white family. After the family moves from Maryland to New Mexico, lonely Makeda misses her best friend Lena, who is also an African American girl in a white family. In secret messages to Lena, Makeda grapples with the complexities of race and identity in order to discover her true self all while her family starts to fall apart.
